The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
