Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.

The one-time leader was sentenced of plotting a military coup in the ninth month and given more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he continued under confinement pending legal challenges.

Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the elderly politician was a precautionary step after fresh information came to light.

This included seeking to disable his tracking device and a summons to a demonstration that could facilitate a possible escape.

Court Filing Details Escape Risks

In a filing authorising the custody, the judge said data from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his flight.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his offspring.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a legislator, called for a gathering of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on the previous day: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or watch it all from your phone there on your settee? I invite you to battle with us."

He said the vigil would be so backers could "pray for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."

Context of Sentencing

The former president was found guilty of orchestrating a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the national vote to his political opponent, Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he had knowledge of a plot which included plans to kill Lula and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.

The scheme was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the backing of the armed forces officials. His successor was inaugurated without issue on the first day of 2023.

But a following week, on the eighth of January, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters attacked and damaged official structures in the federal district, Brasília.

The police intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were detained.

The judges found that the demonstrators had been incited by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the country's army to take action, bring back stability and return him to office.
